Mananasi – A Remarkable Return
We’re excited to bring back Mananasi—an exceptional coffee that delivered an unforgettable experience and has become an icon at Sweil Roastery.
This lot comes from an altitude of up to 1900 meters above sea level, grown in the fertile lands of Kyenjojo District, Uganda, an ideal environment for cultivating high-quality coffee cherries.
The story of Mananasi begins with a unique social experiment led by Great Lakes Coffee. Their mission was to elevate coffee quality in a region historically known for lower-grade Arabica with minimal market value. To achieve this, they developed a specialized farmer training program.
Lead farmers are trained extensively in agronomy, harvesting, and processing techniques, then each leader mentors a group of 35 smallholder farmers. These groups are rewarded financially based on quality—higher quality coffee means higher earnings. Lead farmers also receive additional incentives for effectively transferring knowledge and maintaining high training standards.
The Red Cherry Program
This program represents the next step in continuous quality improvement over recent years. It focuses on one core principle: quality first.
Farmers are trained to pick only fully ripe red cherries, which are then carefully dried on raised beds. Once fully dried, the coffee is sent to the processing station where all defects are meticulously removed—ensuring a clean and refined cup profile.
